Norwegian Elkhound translates as Norwegian Moose Dog - it has changed the least over the past 6,000 years, comrad to the Vikings, a defender of the flocks, he herded from wolves and bear and two legged predators, a hunter with a Normadic, Nomadic Norseman. All in all, a fearless animal - devoted to his master, his Nordic traits untainted by other blood. Elkhound is a hunter of big game, especially moose (in his native Norway) but he can become well-trained in bear, lynx, bob-cat or lion. The elkhound scents and tracks his game, brings to bay, gives high pitched tongue to bring the hunter. He neatly avoids destruction through his bouncing agility. He is undoubtedly "Spitz" stock, similar to sled dogs. He has been sketched and painted in watercolor by Sharon, with a picture of a moose in the background. The Norwegian Elkhound is an amazing animal, and one that Sharon holds very dear. She had her wonderful Snoka for many years.
